The country’s best young players perform standards by Count Basie, Duke Ellington and many more greats. Guest vocalist, Alice Zawadzki joins conductor Mike Hall.

The RNCM Jazz Collective exists to introduce younger students to playing in a large jazz ensemble. Many of the players tonight, only began their studies at the College last September.

The ensemble is in its eleventh year and has made countless successful appearances around the North West, including a number of school workshops the most recent showcasing the history of jazz.

The RNCM. makes jazz education available to all of its students, rather than offering a full time specialist course in jazz studies, this helps the students to develop the broad set of skills which are demanded of today’s professional musician. There are two large jazz ensembles, small groups, weekly classes on improvisation and specialist, jazz based, instrumental classes, as well as master-classes with visiting musicians from around the world.

Although the programme won’t be known until the night of the concert, it is sure to contain plenty of standards arranged for the great big bands of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman etc., as well as some more contemporary numbers arranged by their enthusiastic conductor/arranger Mike Hall.

In addition to the big band we are very lucky to have, as guest vocalist, Miss Alice Zawadzki. Alice is a former student at RNCM. who has built a big reputation for herself as jazz singer, this is definitely an event not to be missed.
