50 years of scientific discovery
Added on: Tue Jan 1 2013 in the science category.
In this 50th year of the Bollington Festival we are planning events highlighting 50 years of scientific discovery. We’re planning costumes in the carnival procession, scientific scarecrows placed in gardens and public places and a pop-up laboratory with hands-on experiments and exhibits based on the science discoveries depicted by the scarecrows and in the carnival parade.
We’ve applied for grant funding for various aspects such as running the hands-on experiments or inviting a vegetable orchestra. If our biggest grant application is successful, there will be a biomedical theme for many of the science events. So you might see scarecrows performing a heart transplant operation, or using a laser for eye surgery, or you might be invited to take part in experiments to explore pulse rate and blood oxygen levels before and after exercise or to investigate if there is a correlation between height and vital capacity of the lungs.
If there's something from the past 50 years of biomedical discovery that you'd particularly like to see at the Festival, please contact us with your suggestions.
Help us make a timeline of significant discoveries, to inspire costumes, scarecrows and hands-on experiments.
